Motion Detection for Door Activation
Microwave radar sensors are the standard activation technology for commercial door openings. These sensors detect approaching movement — vehicles, forklifts, or pedestrians — and trigger the door to open before traffic reaches the threshold. BEA’s motion sensors can be mounted at a variety of heights and angles to accommodate different door sizes and traffic patterns. For outdoor installations or harsh industrial environments, NEMA 4 rated enclosures are available to protect the sensor from moisture, dust, and temperature extremes. Adjustable detection zones allow the sensor to be tuned so that parallel traffic does not cause unnecessary door cycles, reducing wear on the operator and saving energy.
Presence Detection and Door Safety
Once a door begins to close, safety becomes the priority. Active infrared and laser-based presence sensors continuously monitor the area below and around the closing door to detect people, vehicles, or obstructions. If anything is detected within the closing zone, the sensor signals the operator to stop or reverse the door before contact occurs. This is a critical layer of protection in high-traffic loading dock environments where forklifts, personnel, and material handling equipment share the same opening. Laser-based systems provide highly accurate volumetric detection, generating multiple angled laser curtains that can identify objects based on direction, speed, and size — reducing false triggers while maintaining reliable protection.
Dual Technology for Combined Activation and Safety
In many applications, a single sensor needs to perform both functions — activating the door when traffic approaches and protecting users during the closing cycle. BEA’s dual technology sensors combine microwave radar with active infrared in one housing. The radar component handles motion detection for door activation, while the infrared component provides presence detection for safety. This combined approach reduces the number of devices needed at each opening, simplifies wiring, and lowers total installation cost without compromising performance or compliance.
Touchless and Wireless Activation
For environments where hygiene is a concern or where traditional hardwired sensors are impractical, BEA offers touchless activation plates and wireless transmitter-receiver systems. Touchless sensors react to intentional hand movement near the device, providing a completely contact-free way to open a door. Wireless systems eliminate the need to run conduit and wire between the activation point and the door operator, making them ideal for retrofit applications or openings where trenching or surface-mounted wiring is not feasible. Wireless transmitters are available in 300 MHz, 433 MHz, and 900 MHz frequencies, with NEMA 4 rated handheld options for use in industrial settings.
