Trailer Wheel Chocks

Improves Dock Safety

Trailer Wheel Chocks are an excellent compliment to loading dock safety systems already in place. The purpose of these different wheel chock styles are to prevent trailers from rolling backwards while loading and unloading, creating an extra layer of safety, compliant with OSHA Regulations. These products are available in multiple sizes and materials for applications where non-standard materials are required.

Types of Chocks for Trucks and Trailers

Choosing the right chocks

The two main types of chocks include pyramid style and curved style (also known as wedge style). Both types are slightly different in that the pyramid style is the same on both sides and can be used either way — making it more versatile. The wedge style is curved on one side and cradles the tire a little bit more. Both types work well and one is not necessarily more effective than the other. Use of a particular style comes down to personal preference.

Once a style is determined, it’s important to choose the right size. For standard truck and trailer size wheels, you should choose chock that’s about 1/4″ of the height measurement of the tire. For example, if you have a 34″ tire, you will need a wheel chock that’s at least 8.5″ high. Along with the tire height, the chock also needs to be is wider than your tire’s diameter. Oversized, industrial vehicles are the exception and wheel chocks may not abide by the 1/4″ height guideline. In that type of a situation, consult the vehicle’s owner’s manual for correct size and use of truck chocks.

Lastly, it’s important to remember the terrain’s grade and condition (soft, firm, wet, etc.) where the truck or trailer will be parked and consider using two chocks to provide adequate protection against rolling.

Features and Benefits

The variety of materials for chocks, including rubber, metal (aluminum) and urethane, allow for use in a variety of applications. Rubber is durable, but not as resistant to the elements as urethane, therefore they’re commonly used in warehouses or other enclosed areas. Urethane trailer chocks are highly durable and can withstand impact, yet are lightweight and easy to move. It’s also resilient to weather elements, as well as corrosive materials. Metal is ideal for lightweight applications, but may rust or corrode over time.

Regardless of the material, these trailer chocks are a great addition to safety for your loading docks. For more information, fill out the form below and a product specialist will be in touch soon.
