Zone-Controlled Conveyor Powered by 24V Brushless DC Rollers
Conventional powered roller conveyors rely on centralized motors, drive chains, and sprockets to move products through the line. When one section needs service, the entire system stops. The 24V MDR conveyor eliminates this dependency by placing a brushless DC motor inside individual rollers, creating independent zones that operate, accumulate, and shut down on their own. Each zone is self-contained — if one zone requires attention, the rest of the system continues running.
This zone-based architecture also enables zero pressure accumulation, where sensors detect product in each zone and hold upstream zones until downstream space becomes available. Products queue without touching, which protects cartons, totes, packaged goods, and barcode labels from contact damage and back pressure.
Performance and Versatility
The MDR system supports speeds from 20 to 200 FPM, making it suitable for everything from slow-speed accumulation buffers to high-throughput transport lines. Standard designs can be modified to handle heavier loads when the application requires it, and multiple controls options are available to match different levels of automation — from simple cascade logic to full external PLC integration.
Space and Energy Efficiency
Without traditional power transmission components like reducers, drive chains, and high-voltage motors, the MDR frame requires less vertical height than competing conveyor technologies. This lower profile means multiple conveyor lines can be tiered in the same vertical space, and frames can mount directly to the floor without elevated support structures. The run-on-demand feature shuts rollers off when no product is detected, reducing energy consumption compared to continuously running systems.
Quiet Operation
MDR conveyors are among the quietest powered roller systems available. Low-noise ABEC bearings in every roller, combined with the elimination of reducers, chains, and high-voltage motors, create an operating environment that is noticeably quieter than chain-driven or line-shaft alternatives. This is especially valuable in distribution centers, packaging areas, and facilities where conveyor noise affects worker comfort or is adjacent to office, retail, or customer-facing spaces.
Modular Construction and Reduced Installation Costs
MDR conveyor sections arrive pre-wired with modular plug-and-play connectors. Installation consists of bolting sections together and connecting power and control cables — no electrician running high-voltage drops to individual motors. This modular approach also makes future reconfiguration simple: unplug and unbolt sections, rearrange them to match new layouts, and reconnect.
Zero Pressure Accumulation Features

- Slug release: Multiple zones release simultaneously to group products
- Internal logic: Built-in zone controllers handle accumulation without external systems
- External PLC logic: Full integration with plant-level automation and controls
Accessory Equipment
- Tapered roller curves
- 30° and 45° spurs
- 90° transfers
- Diverters
- Reversible zones
- Variable speed zones
Applications
The 24V MDR conveyor is the standard starting point for powered carton and tote handling systems in distribution, fulfillment, manufacturing, and packaging operations. It is commonly specified for order fulfillment and e-commerce sort lines, carton and tote accumulation between processes, packaging and labeling line integration, automated warehouse transport, and any application where zero pressure accumulation, quiet operation, or modular expandability is required.
MDR vs. FMDR — Choosing the Right 24V Conveyor
Barron Equipment carries both the standard MDR and the Omni FMDR (Flat Motor Driven Roller) conveyor. The standard MDR supports a wider speed range (20–200 FPM), can be modified for heavier loads, and offers the broadest accessory and controls ecosystem. The FMDR uses a flat motor for a lower roller profile, making it the better choice when vertical clearance is extremely tight or when the lower roller height is needed for specific integration requirements. For most carton and tote handling applications, the standard MDR is the more versatile starting point.
Selection Assistance from Barron Equipment
Designing an MDR conveyor system starts with understanding what you need to move, how fast, how far, and whether accumulation or automation integration is required. Barron Equipment’s conveyor specialists provide system design, layout planning, installation, and service for 24V MDR conveyor systems across Iowa and the Midwest.
