Overview
Strong VHB tape provides the simplicity of a tape fastener with the strength of bolts, screws and other fasteners. A multi-purpose adhesive on both sides of a conformable foam carrier allows the tape to bond to relatively irregular surfaces and mixed substrates, with excellent adhesion to metal, glass and a wide variety of plastics. It can be applied at 32°F and is temperature-resistant up to 300°F.Rather than bonding at one point or even a series of points, this high-strength bonding tape distributes the stress load across the entire area of the joint. This load distribution is what gives 3M® VHB® Tape its fastener-grade holding power — and why it has become the bonding solution of choice in applications that once required drilling, riveting, or welding. The tape itself remains tacky even when wet, so it will not release from a surface when it encounters moisture — a critical performance requirement in loading dock and warehouse environments.
Features & Benefits
These acrylic foam tapes can be used to seal the door jambs to prevent extreme temperatures from creeping into the indoor space. The tapes stay tacky even when wet, so they will not detach from an object when encountering water. The conformable foam core allows the tape to follow minor surface variations and irregular profiles — making it effective not just on smooth, flat substrates but also on surfaces with slight texture, curvature, or inconsistency. Once applied and allowed to dwell, the bond actually builds strength over time as the adhesive flows into micro-irregularities in the substrate surface. [barroneq.com]
3M® VHB® Tape has the tensile strength of screw rivets and other fasteners. It can adhere to a wide variety of surfaces, such as metal, glass, plastics and painted and powder-coated surfaces, creating a nearly permanent bond. These high-strength, double-sided acrylic foam tapes withstand both high and low temperatures and temperature cycling as well as UV light, moisture and solvents while maintaining strength and reliability. The 36-yard roll length on both width options provides sufficient material for multi-piece seal installation or repeated-use dock applications without frequent reordering.
Applications
- Waterproof patching — filling small gaps or sealing minor leaks in door jambs, header seals, or door panel joints where water infiltration is occurring
- Weather seal installation — bonding door bottom seals, jamb seals, or other weatherstrip products to metal, glass, or painted surfaces where mechanical fasteners would damage the substrate
- Dock door jamb sealing — applying along door jambs to block cold air infiltration and prevent extreme temperatures from entering the facility through gap areas not covered by standard weather seals
- Surface bonding on irregular substrates — bonding components to surfaces that are powder coated, painted, or slightly textured, where standard adhesives or tape products would fail to hold
- Trim and panel attachment — securing lightweight panels, trim pieces, or mounting brackets without visible fasteners in areas where appearance matters or drilling is not practical
