Dock Seals and Shelters
Overview
Every time a trailer backs into a loading dock, a gap forms between the truck and the building. That gap is where energy escapes, pests get in, and outside air contaminates the dock environment. Both dock seals and shelters from Barron Equipment have seal features that provide energy efficiency while loading and unloading trailers. They are installed at the dock door opening and compress against the trailer when it backs in — creating a perimeter seal that protects your facility, your cargo, and your workforce during every loading and unloading event.
Barron Equipment carries two brands — Fairborn and NOVA — each offering multiple seal and shelter configurations. Whether your dock services a consistent fleet of standard trailers, a mix of vehicles at varying heights, trailers with swing doors, or specialized tanker trucks, there is a product in this line designed for your application.
What is the Difference Between a Dock Seal and a Dock Shelter?
The main difference between the two is that dock shelters stick out a little further and contact the end of the truck, increasing thermal insulation and climate control. Dock shelters are better for protecting personnel and products from inclement weather conditions, while dock seals feature a head pad and side pads that help provide some environmental control and keep loading docks safe from potential damage.
Dock Seals use foam side pads and a head pad or head curtain that compress directly against the trailer body when the truck backs in. They create a tight perimeter seal around three sides of the vehicle. Dock seals are generally lower in profile, more economical, and well suited for docks that service consistent vehicle types. Within dock seals, you’ll find options for fixed head pads, adjustable head pads, head curtains, L-shaped side pads, and specialized weather headers — each addressing a different combination of vehicle heights, door sizes, and facility conditions.
Dock Shelters use foam-covered or rigid side frames and a head curtain that wrap around the end of the truck rather than just its perimeter. Because the entire back of the truck is enclosed by the shelter, leakage of water and heat is kept to a minimum. Dock shelters are better suited for climate-controlled facilities, high-volume operations, or docks that regularly service trailers of varying heights and widths. They allow full unimpeded access to the trailer interior while maintaining a tighter environmental seal than most dock seal configurations.
The right choice depends on your door opening dimensions, vehicle fleet, approach grade, and operational priorities. Barron’s team can help you determine which configuration best fits your dock.

Controls Environment and Protects Your Dock
Across all products in this category, the core purpose is the same: dock seals and shelters save companies thousands of dollars in heating and cooling costs each year, as well as protect equipment from damage like dust, dirt, rain, critters, bugs, etc. Dock seals provide a tight seal around the perimeter of the opening, allowing for increased energy efficiency and protecting docks from damage from incoming trailers. The benefits extend beyond energy savings. A properly sealed dock opening keeps your workforce comfortable and productive during loading and unloading. It protects cargo from moisture, pests, and outside air contamination — especially important in food processing, cold storage, pharmaceutical, and high-value manufacturing environments. It also reduces wear on dock equipment, prevents pest infiltration, and minimizes the risk of slip-and-fall accidents caused by rain or snow entering the dock area.
For facilities with sloped drive approaches — where rain naturally funnels toward the dock opening — the Fairborn WeatherGuard Series 1600 addresses water infiltration specifically, creating a watertight seal at the top of the trailer that deflects rain and snow away from the loading area. For specialty applications like milk tanker transfers, NOVA Dairy Seals provide a four-sided perimeter seal that meets the sanitation requirements of food-grade transfer operations.
Dock Seal and Shelter Construction
All dock seals and shelters in this category share common construction principles — designed for long-term durability in demanding loading dock environments.
Foam is the foundation of every product. Fairborn developed an exclusive polyurethane foam that compresses and conforms to the irregularities of the vehicle body, then returns fully to its original shape after the truck pulls away. This recovery characteristic ensures consistent sealing performance across thousands of truck cycles. NOVA products use high-density polyurethane foam with similar performance characteristics.
Frames are built from select dimensional lumber — pressure treated and kiln dried before and after treating — for moisture resistance and structural stability. Formed steel frames are available on many models for applications demanding additional strength. Head frames on shelter products use structural galvanized steel tubular construction with welded joints for heavy-duty performance and snow load support.
Fabric is a critical differentiator. Fairborn created the first certified performance fabrics designed specifically for dock seal and shelter construction. Dynalon — their flagship material — carries extraordinary tear and abrasion resistance and is warranted against weathering for five years, including sunlight, rain, cold, and heat. Dynaflex and additional fabric grades are available across the product line.
Hardware on all products is protected with heavy-duty galvanized or zinc rust-resistant coatings. Chemical welds bond foam directly to the frame for maximum structural integrity. Air exhaust vents on each pad allow free air escape during compression while preventing moisture from entering. High-visibility yellow guide stripes on side pads help drivers back in accurately on every approach.
Installation & Service
Our team of service technicians at Barron Equipment have been installing dock seals and shelters for over 43 years. Our experts can replace old seals and shelters with brand new ones, or install new ones to an opening that has not previously had dock seals or shelters.
Proper installation starts with accurate measurement. Before any seal or shelter is ordered, Barron’s team confirms door height and width, dock height, bumper projection, approach grade, and the range of vehicle heights that will be serviced at each door. These measurements determine the appropriate product type, size, projection, and compression range. All dock seals and shelters require adequate bumper protection — a minimum of 4″ projection — to protect both the seal and the building wall on every truck contact.
Regular inspection of dock seals and shelters helps identify wear before it leads to energy loss or product damage. Fabric tears, compressed foam that no longer recovers, loose mounting hardware, worn guide stripes, and damaged curtain assemblies are all common maintenance items that Barron’s team addresses quickly and professionally. In many cases, individual components — such as curtain panels, pleat assemblies, or cover fabric — can be replaced without removing the entire unit, reducing downtime and cost.
