Overview

Not every lifting operation is suited for a steel crane. The HSI 582 Series is a portable, fixed and adjustable aluminum gantry crane — lightweight and easy to assemble and disassemble, making it an economical solution when portability is required. No foundation is needed.

Available in configurations from 1/4 ton (500 lbs) through 3 ton (6,000 lbs), the 582 Series is the right choice when the weight of the crane itself matters — when you need to transport it in a van, carry it up stairs, move it between buildings, or operate in environments where steel isn't practical.

Looking for a steel gantry crane? See the HSI 511 (fixed height, up to 2,000 lbs), HSI 511HD (fixed height, up to 10,000 lbs), HSI 512 (adjustable height, up to 2,000 lbs), or HSI 512HD (adjustable height, up to 10,000 lbs).

Why Aluminum? — The Weight Advantage Explained

Steel gantry cranes are robust and versatile, but they come with a significant drawback in many applications: they're heavy. The 582's aluminum construction solves this problem without sacrificing functionality.

What aluminum gives you:

  • Significantly lighter than steel — The 582 can be moved, transported, and repositioned by one or two people without mechanical assistance
  • Corrosion resistance — Aluminum naturally resists rust and oxidation, making it suitable for washdown environments, outdoor applications, humid conditions, or facilities requiring cleaner materials
  • Easy assembly and disassembly — The 582 is described specifically as lightweight and easy to assemble and disassemble, which means it can be set up at a new location quickly and broken down for transport or storage without specialized tools
  • Economical portability — Lower transport cost and effort versus steel cranes of equivalent capacity

When the crane needs to ride in a truck bed, climb a loading dock, travel between job sites, or operate in a space with load limits, aluminum wins.

Adjustable Height & Span

Like the steel 512 Series, the 582 features adjustable height and span — the beam can be raised or lowered to match the exact lift clearance your job requires, and the leg spread can be adjusted for different workspace configurations.

The 582 offers span lengths up to 20+ feet and heights up to 20+ feet, giving you the flexibility to accommodate a wide range of load sizes, equipment heights, and workspace layouts within a single crane system.

Capacities & Accessories

The 582 Series is available in the following capacity configurations:

Capacity Pounds
1/4 ton 500 lbs
1/2 ton 1,000 lbs
1 ton 2,000 lbs
2 ton 4,000 lbs
3 ton 6,000 lbs

Depending on the capacity, the gantry is equipped with phenolic, poly coated, or forged steel heavy-duty swivel casters. All caster types feature roller bearings for ease of movement and grease fittings for ease of maintenance. 'V' Groove and flanged wheels are also available upon request.

Available accessories include:

  • Tight Wire Kit (Festooning / "Tagline")
  • Swivel Locks
  • Wheel Locks
  • Rigid or 'V' Groove Casters
  • Hoist & Trolley Packages3

Where the 582 Belongs — Applications for Aluminum Gantry Cranes

The 582 Series is the right tool when material choice, weight, or environment rules out a steel crane. Common applications include:

  • Food processing and beverage facilities — Aluminum resists corrosion from washdown chemicals and doesn't rust in wet environments; meets material standards where steel is problematic
  • Pharmaceutical and cleanroom environments — Aluminum's non-reactive, easy-to-clean surface suits regulated environments with strict material standards
  • Field service and on-site installation — Transport the crane in a pickup truck or cargo van, set it up on location, and break it down when the job is done; no rigging crew required
  • Facilities with floor load limits — Lightweight construction reduces the total load on the floor compared to steel cranes of equivalent capacity
  • Multi-building or multi-site operations — One crane serves many locations because it's light enough to move between them
  • Maintenance operations in remote or elevated areas — Carry the crane to the mezzanine, rooftop, or second-floor work area without a forklift
  • Outdoor and marine environments — Aluminum's corrosion resistance makes it more durable than steel in exposed or salt-air environments

FAQs

What is the difference between the 582 aluminum gantry crane and the 511 or 512 steel cranes?

The critical difference is material. The 582 is constructed from aluminum, making it lightweight and easy to assemble and disassemble, while the 511 and 512 Series are constructed from steel. Both types are portable and require no foundation. The aluminum 582 is the right choice when crane weight matters — for transport, multi-site use, corrosion-resistant environments, or facilities with material requirements that exclude steel.

What capacities are available in the HSI 582 Series?

The 582 Series is available from 1/4 ton (500 lbs) up to 3 ton (6,000 lbs). Contact Barron Equipment to confirm available span and height configurations for your specific capacity requirement.

Why choose an aluminum gantry crane over a steel one?

The aluminum 582 Series is specifically designed to be lightweight and easy to assemble and disassemble — advantages that steel cranes of equivalent capacity cannot match. Aluminum also offers natural corrosion resistance, making it suitable for food processing, pharmaceutical, washdown, outdoor, and marine environments where steel would degrade or introduce contamination risk. The trade-off is that the 582 tops out at 6,000 lbs; heavier applications require the steel 511HD or 512HD.

Does the 582 require a foundation?

No. The 582 requires no foundation. It is a self-supporting portable gantry crane on casters that can be positioned on any flat, stable surface and relocated as needed.

Is the 582 height adjustable?

Yes. The 582 features adjustable height and span. The beam can be raised or lowered to match the lift clearance required for your specific application, and the span can be adjusted to fit different workspace widths.

What type of casters does the 582 use?

Depending on the capacity, the 582 is equipped with phenolic, poly coated, or forged steel heavy-duty swivel casters. All caster types feature roller bearings for ease of movement and grease fittings for ease of maintenance. 'V' Groove and flanged wheels are also available upon request.

Is motorization available on the 582?

No. Unlike the steel 511 and 512 Series, the 582 aluminum crane does not include a motorization option. However, because of its lightweight aluminum construction, the 582 is significantly easier to reposition by hand than a comparable steel crane — reducing the need for powered movement in most applications.

Safety Information

The following safety information is provided by Handling Systems International, Inc. (HSI). Please read all warnings before installing or operating this equipment.
  • Inspect entire system annually or more frequently as defined by OSHA 1910.179. Inspection must be performed by a qualified person. Failure to do so may cause serious injury or death.
  • This equipment, used as a crane, is not in any way designed for lifting, supporting, or transporting humans. Failure to follow specified load limitations can result in serious bodily injury or death.
  • The rated load of the hoist as marked on the hoist must not exceed the rated capacity of the jib as labeled on the boom. Do not install a hoist with a capacity greater than that of the jib.
  • It is solely the customer’s responsibility to provide suitable mounting supports for the jib crane. HSI recommends that the customer consult a qualified professional architect or engineer in your local area to determine the adequacy of the building support.
