Overview
Barron Equipment carries the Caldwell Model BL basic lift magnet — a lightweight permanent magnetic lifter engineered for portability, heat tolerance, and corrosion resistance in demanding work environments. Built with a durable stainless steel casing rather than standard painted steel, the BL handles exposure to moisture, chemicals, wash-down areas, and outdoor conditions without the rust and degradation that shorten the life of conventional magnet housings.
At just 13 to 28 lbs. depending on model, the BL is one of the lightest lifting magnets in the Caldwell line. This matters on construction sites, in field service work, and in maintenance applications where the operator carries the magnet to the work location by hand rather than leaving it attached to a crane hook all day. The compact, lightweight design also reduces the headroom consumed below the hook — a practical advantage in tight spaces and low-clearance environments.
Built for High Temperature Applications
The Model BL is heat resistant up to 300°F (148°C) — the highest temperature rating in Barron's permanent lifting magnet lineup. This makes the BL the right choice for handling warm steel coming off plasma tables, laser cutters, saws, ovens, and heat treatment processes where part temperatures exceed the limits of standard permanent magnets. Where the Caldwell Model VL is rated to 180°F and standard permanent magnets may not specify a temperature limit at all, the BL gives operators a defined, tested safety margin for handling hot workpieces.
The stainless steel casing also performs better in high-temperature environments than painted or powder-coated housings, which can blister, crack, and lose protective properties when repeatedly exposed to heat cycling.
Features and Benefits

Why Stainless Steel Construction Matters
Most lifting magnets use a painted carbon steel housing that protects the magnet internals from the environment. In dry, indoor shop settings, this is adequate. But in construction, outdoor steel yards, shipyards, food processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, wash-down environments, and coastal facilities, painted housings corrode quickly. Rust weakens the casing, degrades the magnetic circuit, and shortens the working life of the magnet.
The Caldwell Model BL solves this with a stainless steel casting that resists corrosion at the material level — not just at the coating level. There is no paint to chip, blister, or peel. The result is a lifting magnet that maintains its structural integrity and magnetic performance over a longer service life in harsh environments, with less maintenance required to keep it in working condition.
Applications
The Model BL basic lift magnet is designed for operators who need a portable, rugged, heat-tolerant magnetic lifter that goes where the work is. Common applications include handling hot steel parts from plasma cutters, laser machines, saws, and heat treatment ovens up to 300°F, field construction and structural steel erection where magnets are carried from pick to pick, shipyard and marine fabrication where salt air and moisture demand corrosion-resistant equipment, outdoor steel yards and storage areas exposed to weather, food processing and pharmaceutical facilities that require stainless steel equipment, maintenance and repair operations where a lightweight portable magnet speeds up steel handling tasks, and any application where a standard painted magnet housing would corrode or fail from heat exposure.
Selection Assistance
The Model BL is available in three capacities. The BL0400 lifts up to 400 lbs. and weighs just 13 lbs. — ideal for lighter pieces and maximum portability. The BL1000 lifts up to 1,000 lbs. at 18 lbs. unit weight. The BL1500 lifts up to 1,500 lbs. at 28 lbs. — the highest capacity in the BL series. All capacity ratings are based on clean, smooth, flat low carbon steel plate with the full magnet face in contact with the load. Derating is required for loads with rust, scale, or rough surfaces. Do not use on material thinner than 1/4 in.
When lifting sheets 4 ft. x 8 ft. or larger, use two or more magnets on a spreader bar to prevent flexing, sagging, or peel-off. Material less than 3/8 in. thick is susceptible to magnet bleed-through, which can result in two sheets lifted at once.
For higher capacities, on/off control, or round material capability, Barron carries the Caldwell Model CREM, Model VL, and Model RELM electromagnetic lifters. For a multi-magnet spreader system, see the Caldwell magnetic lifting beam.
