Overview

When you need a portable gantry crane that adapts to your lift height requirements — not just your floor space — the 512 Series delivers. Unlike fixed-height models, the 512 Series features adjustable height and span, meaning you can configure the beam height to match the exact lift clearance your application requires, without swapping equipment or improvising.

Designed for everyday use, this gantry crane is recommended for production, installation, and maintenance service where portability is required. It requires no foundation. Available in 1/2 ton (1,000 lbs) and 1 ton (2,000 lbs) configurations, the 512 Series gives you height flexibility, floor freedom, and portability — all in one system.

Looking for a fixed-height model? See the HSI 511 for a portable crane with a fixed beam position. For heavier loads, see the HSI 512HD (4,000–10,000 lbs).

The Adjustable Advantage — What Sets the 512 Apart

The defining feature of the 512 Series is its adjustable height and span. Span lengths are available up to 25+ feet and heights up to 25+ feet. In practice, this means:

  • Variable lift clearance — Set the beam height for each specific job, rather than working around a fixed overhead height
  • Flexible span configuration — Widen or narrow the leg spread to match the load or workspace
  • Maximum versatility — One crane handles multiple application types across different work areas

This is the right choice when your operations involve varying load heights, multi-purpose use across different workstation types, or maintenance tasks on equipment of different sizes.

Casters, Wheels & Portability

Depending on the capacity, the gantry is equipped with phenolic, poly coated, or forged steel heavy-duty swivel casters. All caster types feature roller bearings for ease of movement. Grease fittings are included for ease of maintenance. 'V' Groove and flanged wheels are also available upon request.

Swivel locks and wheel locks are available to stabilize the crane during lifts, keeping it in position while you work without requiring it to be anchored to the floor.

Capacities & Accessories

The 512 Series is available in the following ecommerce configurations:

Capacity Pounds
1/2 ton 1,000 lbs
1 ton 2,000 lbs

Available accessories include:

  • Tight Wire Kit (Festooning / "Tagline") for cable management
  • Swivel Locks for caster stabilization
  • Wheel Locks for additional security during lifts
  • Rigid or 'V' Groove Casters for different floor surfaces
  • Hoist & Trolley Packages matched to your capacity requirements
  • Motorization for powered movement

Where Adjustable Height Makes the Difference

The 512 Series fits operations that require height flexibility alongside portability. Common applications include:

  • Multi-height workstations — Adjust the beam height between jobs rather than compromising on clearance
  • Maintenance departments — Service equipment of varying heights in a shared work area
  • Facilities with changing layouts — Reconfigure both the height and span as your workflow evolves
  • Assembly operations — Support parts positioning across different product sizes or assembly fixtures
  • Machine tending with varied equipment — Load and unload machines of different heights without fixed crane infrastructure
  • Rental and contract environments — One adjustable crane serves multiple job site configurations

FAQs

What is the difference between the HSI 511 and the HSI 512 gantry crane?

The key difference is the height and span configuration. The Model 511 is a fixed height gantry crane, while the Model 512 is an adjustable height gantry crane. The 511 has a set beam height once assembled; the 512 allows the operator to raise or lower the beam and adjust the span to match different job requirements. Both are portable and require no foundation.

What capacities are available in the HSI 512 Series?

The HSI 512 is available via Barron Equipment's ecommerce platform in 1/2 ton (1,000 lbs) and 1 ton (2,000 lbs) configurations. For heavier loads, see the HSI 512HD (4,000–10,000 lbs).

How does the height adjustment work on the 512 Series?

To obtain the desired height, remove the pins (shipped in place at the bottom-hole position) and lift to the desired height. Reinstall the pin and cotter pin securely. This allows quick height changes between jobs without tools or significant effort.

Does the 512 gantry crane require a foundation?

No. The 512 requires no foundation.  It is a self-supporting portable gantry crane on casters that can be positioned and repositioned on any flat, stable surface.

What span and height configurations are available?

Span lengths are available up to 25+ feet and heights up to 25+ feet. Contact Barron Equipment to discuss custom configurations outside standard ranges.

What type of casters does the 512 use?

Depending on the capacity, the gantry is equipped with phenolic, poly coated, or forged steel heavy-duty swivel casters. All caster types feature roller bearings for ease of movement and grease fittings for ease of maintenance. 'V' Groove and flanged wheels are also available upon request.

Can I add motorization to the 512 Series?

Yes. Motorization is available as an option for the 512 Series, allowing powered movement of the entire crane across the floor. This is especially useful in high-cycle environments where frequent repositioning is required.

Safety Information

The following safety information is provided by Handling Systems International, Inc. (HSI). Please read all warnings before installing or operating this equipment.
  • Inspect entire system annually or more frequently as defined by OSHA 1910.179. Inspection must be performed by a qualified person. Failure to do so may cause serious injury or death.
  • This equipment, used as a crane, is not in any way designed for lifting, supporting, or transporting humans. Failure to follow specified load limitations can result in serious bodily injury or death.
  • The rated load of the hoist as marked on the hoist must not exceed the rated capacity of the jib as labeled on the boom. Do not install a hoist with a capacity greater than that of the jib.
  • It is solely the customer’s responsibility to provide suitable mounting supports for the jib crane. HSI recommends that the customer consult a qualified professional architect or engineer in your local area to determine the adequacy of the building support. There should be no deviation from the recommended foundation size or installation recommendations without first consulting a qualified professional. Failure to check this item can result in serious bodily injury or death.
  • Do not impact end stops at speed. Only impact end stops with caution.
  • Never use end stops for repetitive boom impacts.
  • To prevent trolley from running off of the boom, do not operate crane without end stop bolt firmly secured in place on the end of the boom.
  • Do not operate hoist or crane if cotter pins are not in place and properly bent over on both sides of hoist trolley. Check regularly that the cotter pins are in place and securing the hoist on the hoist trolley.
  • Inspect jib for missing or broken parts before operating.
  • Do not adjust or disassemble crane when jib is under load.
  • When moving jib, position the load in the center of the boom.
  • Be certain the load is directly beneath boom before load is lifted. Do not pull sideways on crane.
  • Ensure the load is not attached to the floor and remove any obstacles that impede lifting.
  • Adjustments and/or repairs should be made in an area where it will have the least interference with operation.
  • Never stand under jib when disassembling crane.
