Overview

Not every facility is set up for a fixed crane installation. When you need lifting capability that moves with the work — from one workstation to the next, or from one job site to another — a portable gantry crane is the right solution. Designed for everyday use, this steel gantry crane is recommended for production, installation, and maintenance service where portability is required. It requires no foundation, making it one of the most flexible and cost-effective lifting solutions available.

Available in capacities from 1/8 ton (250 lbs) up to 1 ton (2,000 lbs), the HSI 511 Series is a fixed-height, self-supporting gantry that travels freely across any flat floor. When the work moves, so does the crane.

Need more lifting capacity? This page covers the 511 Series up to 2,000 lbs. For applications requiring 4,000–10,000 lbs, see the HSI 511HD Gantry Cranes.

Built for Portability — Casters, Wheels & Ease of Movement

The portability of this steel gantry crane is built into its foundation — literally. Rather than requiring poured concrete, depending on the capacity, the gantry is equipped with phenolic, poly coated, or forged steel heavy-duty swivel casters. All caster types feature roller bearings for ease of movement and grease fittings for ease of maintenance. 'V' Groove and flanged wheels are also available upon request.

This means the crane can be rolled into position, locked in place for lifting, then repositioned in seconds. Whether you're supporting a shared workstation environment, a maintenance department, or a job-site operation that relocates regularly, the caster system is engineered to make repositioning effortless.

Caster lock options — swivel locks and wheel locks — are available to stabilize the crane during lifts, ensuring safety during operation.

Capacities, Spans & Accessories

The 511 Series is available in the following capacities:

Capacity Pounds
1/2 ton 1,000 lbs
1 ton 2,000 lbs

Span lengths up to 30+ feet are available in the 511 product family. For custom span requirements or configurations outside standard offerings, contact our team for a quote.

Available options and accessories include:

  • Tight Wire Kit (Festooning / "Tagline") for clean cable management
  • Swivel Locks to stabilize casters during lifts
  • Wheel Locks for additional security during operation
  • Rigid or 'V' Groove Casters for different flooring surfaces
  • Hoist & Trolley Packages matched to your capacity requirements
  • Motorization for powered movement of the gantry

Where Portability Makes the Difference

A portable steel gantry crane excels in environments where a fixed installation simply isn't practical. Common applications include:

  • Machine shops and job shops — Move the crane to the machine that needs it, rather than working around a fixed crane's coverage zone
  • Maintenance departments — Position over motors, pumps, compressors, and heavy equipment for removal and reinstallation
  • Assembly operations — Support repetitive component handling across multiple workstations
  • Loading and unloading — Supplement dock or floor-level material handling without permanent infrastructure
  • Rental and contract work — Take the crane to the job site, set it up on any flat surface, and break it down when finished
  • Small fabrication shops — Add lifting capability without the cost and commitment of an installed crane system

The absence of a foundation requirement is the defining advantage. If your facility layout changes, or if your operations require craning in multiple locations, the 511 Series adapts.

Configure the Right System for Your Needs

FAQs

What is a portable gantry crane and how does it differ from a fixed crane?

A portable gantry crane is a self-supporting A-frame or bridge crane that sits on casters, allowing it to be moved from location to location on a flat floor. Unlike jib cranes or bridge cranes, it requires no foundation — meaning there's no need for poured concrete or structural installation. This makes it ideal for facilities where flexibility, temporary setups, or multiple lifting locations are needed.

What capacities are available in the HSI 511 Gantry Crane series?

The HSI 511 Series available via Barron Equipment's ecommerce platform covers 1/2 ton (1,000 lbs) and 1 ton (2,000 lbs) configurations. The 511 product family supports span lengths up to 30+ feet -- for capacities above 2,000 lbs, see the HSI 511HD or contact Barron Equipment for a custom configuration.

What type of casters does the 511 gantry crane use?

Depending on the capacity, the gantry is equipped with phenolic, poly coated, or forged steel heavy-duty swivel casters. All caster types feature roller bearings for ease of movement and grease fittings for ease of maintenance. 'V' Groove and flanged wheels are also available upon request.

Can the 511 gantry crane be used outdoors or on uneven surfaces?

The HSI 511 Series is designed for use on flat, hard surfaces. Standard configurations with swivel casters are best suited for level indoor floors. For outdoor use or specialized flooring, 'V' Groove and flanged wheels are available upon request. For use on rail tracks or other guided systems. Contact Barron Equipment to discuss your specific surface conditions.

Is motorization available for the 511 gantry crane?

Yes. Motorization is available as an option for the 511 Series gantry crane, allowing powered movement of the crane across the floor. This is especially useful in high-cycle production environments or where operators need to reposition the crane frequently throughout the workday.

What is the difference between the HSI 511 and the HSI 512 gantry crane?

The Model 511 is a fixed height gantry crane, while the Model 512 is an adjustable height gantry crane. The 511 maintains a constant height under beam, while the 512 allows the height to be raised or lowered to accommodate different lift height requirements. Barron Equipment carries both configurations.

Safety Information

The following safety information is provided by Handling Systems International, Inc. (HSI). Please read all warnings before installing or operating this equipment.
  • Inspect entire system annually or more frequently as defined by OSHA 1910.179. Inspection must be performed by a qualified person. Failure to do so may cause serious injury or death.
  • This equipment, used as a crane, is not in any way designed for lifting, supporting, or transporting humans. Failure to follow specified load limitations can result in serious bodily injury or death.
  • The rated load of the hoist as marked on the hoist must not exceed the rated capacity of the jib as labeled on the boom. Do not install a hoist with a capacity greater than that of the jib.
  • It is solely the customer’s responsibility to provide suitable mounting supports for the jib crane. HSI recommends that the customer consult a qualified professional architect or engineer in your local area to determine the adequacy of the building support. There should be no deviation from the recommended foundation size or installation recommendations without first consulting a qualified professional. Failure to check this item can result in serious bodily injury or death.
  • Do not impact end stops at speed. Only impact end stops with caution.
  • Never use end stops for repetitive boom impacts.
  • To prevent trolley from running off of the boom, do not operate crane without end stop bolt firmly secured in place on the end of the boom.
  • Do not operate hoist or crane if cotter pins are not in place and properly bent over on both sides of hoist trolley. Check regularly that the cotter pins are in place and securing the hoist on the hoist trolley.
  • Inspect jib for missing or broken parts before operating.
  • Do not adjust or disassemble crane when jib is under load.
  • When moving jib, position the load in the center of the boom.
  • Be certain the load is directly beneath boom before load is lifted. Do not pull sideways on crane.
  • Ensure the load is not attached to the floor and remove any obstacles that impede lifting.
  • Adjustments and/or repairs should be made in an area where it will have the least interference with operation.
  • Never stand under jib when disassembling crane.
