What are Door Fire Ratings?

More common in commercial settings than residential, fire-rated doors are doors that are not supposed to combust during a certain time frame in the average fire. These rolling counter doors are UL, FM and ULC Labeled ranging up to 3 hours to meet today’s fire protection requirements.

Features

Some of the features of these Fire Rated Counter Shutters are that there is a choice of motorized, standard chain hoist, hand-crank, or manual push-up operation systems, depending on the model.

Motor, chain or crank operating systems are recommended for ease of testing and controlled automatic closing speed. Optional UL Classified smoke and draft control can be added to the doors to aid in fire containment. Galvanized steel endlocks are provided per UL procedure.

The curtains are constructed in either 22 gauge galvanized steel in light gray or 22 gauge 300 series stainless steel with #4 finish. Powder coating is also offered.

Certifications

Barron Equipment has a full team of service technicians that are NFPA 80 certified, which is the installation, testing, modifying or repairing of opening protectives, including fire rated rolling doors.

The three key elements of NFPA 80 certification for fire-rated doors, in relation to the annual drop test requirements are:

1. Inspection – a visual check for damage, visibility of labels, painted or coated cables, and any conditions that could affect the door’s operation.

2. Operation – The industrial fire door must be tested to ensure it’s operating smoothly, balanced properly, can close fully without obstruction, and has all missing or damaged parts repaired before proceeding with the drop test.

3. Drop Test/Reset – The drop test for fire doors is to ensure the door will close automatically in the case of a fire emergency. The drop test should be performed twice and the doors need to be reset completely between tests. The doors need to close at a speed between 6 and 24 inches per second.

These three steps must performed by a qualified and certified technician. Barron Equipment is committed to keeping our installation and service technicians up-to-date on NFPA 80 certifications so that we can provide fire door drop testing to customers in the Midwest Area.
