Overview

Heavy loads don't always stay in one place. The HSI 511HD Series delivers industrial-grade lifting capacity in a fully portable, no-foundation gantry crane — purpose-built for operations that need serious lift ratings without the permanence and cost of a fixed installation. Designed for everyday use, including production, installation, and maintenance service where portability is required, with no foundation requirement.

Available in capacities from 2 ton (4,000 lbs) to 5 ton (10,000 lbs) for direct ecommerce purchase, the 511HD is the heavy-duty tier in Barron Equipment's portable gantry crane lineup. At these weight ratings, the crane is engineered with forged steel heavy-duty casters and can be optionally equipped with motorized movement for high-cycle industrial use.

Not the right capacity? See the HSI 511 for lighter loads up to 2,000 lbs, or contact Barron Equipment if your application requires configurations beyond 10,000 lbs.

Heavy-Duty Construction for Industrial Applications

At 2 ton and above, gantry crane design demands more than standard caster hardware. Forged steel heavy-duty swivel casters are used at these capacity ratings, featuring roller bearings for ease of movement and grease fittings for ease of maintenance. Swivel locks and wheel locks are available to stabilize the crane during lifts — critical for safety at these load levels. Motorization is available for the 511HD and is strongly recommended for heavier configurations. At 3 ton and 5 ton capacities, manually repositioning a loaded gantry crane introduces ergonomic risk and throughput limitations. Powered movement supports both operator safety and production efficiency.

Capacities, Spans & Options

Barron Equipment's ecommerce platform stocks 511HD configurations in the following capacity ranges:

Capacity Pounds
2 ton 4,000 lbs
3 ton 6,000 lbs
5 ton 10,000 lbs

Span lengths are available up to 30+ feet. Custom spans for non-standard facility requirements are available — contact Barron Equipment for a quote.

Available options and accessories include:

  • Tight Wire Kit (Festooning / "Tagline")
  • Swivel Locks and Wheel Locks
  • Rigid or 'V' Groove Casters
  • Hoist & Trolley Packages (electric chain or wire rope, matched to your capacity)
  • Motorization for powered floor movement

Industrial Applications — Where Heavy-Duty Portability Wins

At 2 ton and above, a portable gantry crane fills a critical gap: the loads are too heavy for lighter-duty systems, but the operation doesn't justify — or doesn't allow — a fixed installation. Common applications include:

  • Heavy manufacturing and metalworking — Positioning large weldments, castings, and fabricated components between operations without ceiling-mounted infrastructure
  • Automotive and powertrain service — Engine pulls, transmission removal, and drivetrain work in service bays or production cells
  • Maintenance and overhaul — Removing and reinstalling heavy motors, gearboxes, compressors, and pumps in facilities without fixed overhead cranes
  • Equipment installation and rigging — Setting heavy machinery during plant build-out or reconfiguration
  • Construction and industrial sites — Temporary heavy-lift capability on job sites with flat, stable surfaces
  • Warehousing and logistics — Spot-lifting applications where bridge crane coverage doesn't reach

The absence of a foundation requirement is especially valuable at this capacity range: 5-ton installations that would otherwise require significant civil engineering and structural work can instead be deployed and operational in hours.

FAQs

What capacities are available in the HSI 511HD gantry crane?

The 511HD Series is available in three configurations: 2 ton (4,000 lbs), 3 ton (6,000 lbs), and 5 ton (10,000 lbs). All three are available for direct ecommerce purchase at Barron Equipment. For lighter lifting needs up to 2,000 lbs, see the HSI 511 Series.

Does the 511HD gantry crane require a concrete foundation?

No. The 511HD requires no foundation. It is a self-supporting portable gantry crane that sits on heavy-duty casters, allowing it to be positioned on any flat, stable surface. This eliminates the cost and lead time associated with foundation pours and structural crane installations.

What type of casters are used on the 511HD at these weight capacities?

At heavier capacity ratings, the gantry is equipped with forged steel heavy-duty swivel casters, featuring roller bearings for ease of movement and grease fittings for ease of maintenance. 'V' Groove and flanged wheels are also available upon request for use on rail tracks or guided surfaces.

Is motorized movement available on the 511HD?

Yes. Motorization is available as an option. At 3 ton and 5 ton capacities, powered floor movement is strongly recommended. Manually repositioning a loaded heavy-duty gantry introduces ergonomic risk and slows throughput. Motorized movement improves both operator safety and operational efficiency in high-cycle environments.

What span and height options are available?

Span lengths up to 30+ feet are available. Contact Barron Equipment for custom span configurations or non-standard height-under-beam requirements. Our product specialists can help you size the system to your specific facility layout and lift points.

What accessories are available for the 511HD?

Available accessories include a Tight Wire Kit (Festooning/"Tagline"), Swivel Locks, Wheel Locks, Rigid or 'V' Groove Casters, Hoist & Trolley Packages, and Motorization. Barron Equipment can configure an electric chain or wire rope hoist package matched to your 2 ton, 3 ton, or 5 ton application, including VFD options for precision load control.

What is the difference between the HSI 511 and the HSI 511HD?

Both are portable, fixed-height steel gantry cranes that require no foundation. The key difference is capacity: the Model 511 is a fixed height gantry crane available at Barron in 1/2 ton and 1 ton configurations (up to 2,000 lbs). The 511HD extends that same portable design into heavy-duty territory — 2 ton, 3 ton, and 5 ton (up to 10,000 lbs). The 511HD also uses forged steel casters and strongly benefits from motorized movement given the higher load weights.

Safety Information

The following safety information is provided by Handling Systems International, Inc. (HSI). Please read all warnings before installing or operating this equipment.
  • Inspect entire system annually or more frequently as defined by OSHA 1910.179. Inspection must be performed by a qualified person. Failure to do so may cause serious injury or death.
  • This equipment, used as a crane, is not in any way designed for lifting, supporting, or transporting humans. Failure to follow specified load limitations can result in serious bodily injury or death.
  • The rated load of the hoist as marked on the hoist must not exceed the rated capacity of the jib as labeled on the boom. Do not install a hoist with a capacity greater than that of the jib.
  • It is solely the customer’s responsibility to provide suitable mounting supports for the jib crane. HSI recommends that the customer consult a qualified professional architect or engineer in your local area to determine the adequacy of the building support. There should be no deviation from the recommended foundation size or installation recommendations without first consulting a qualified professional. Failure to check this item can result in serious bodily injury or death.
  • Do not impact end stops at speed. Only impact end stops with caution.
  • Never use end stops for repetitive boom impacts.
  • To prevent trolley from running off of the boom, do not operate crane without end stop bolt firmly secured in place on the end of the boom.
  • Do not operate hoist or crane if cotter pins are not in place and properly bent over on both sides of hoist trolley. Check regularly that the cotter pins are in place and securing the hoist on the hoist trolley.
  • Inspect jib for missing or broken parts before operating.
  • Do not adjust or disassemble crane when jib is under load.
  • When moving jib, position the load in the center of the boom.
  • Be certain the load is directly beneath boom before load is lifted. Do not pull sideways on crane.
  • Ensure the load is not attached to the floor and remove any obstacles that impede lifting.
  • Adjustments and/or repairs should be made in an area where it will have the least interference with operation.
  • Never stand under jib when disassembling crane.
