Overview
The FPU occupies a specific position in the NOVA dock seal lineup: wider than the standard FP, standard height rather than the taller FPH or FPHU, and using a conventional foam head pad rather than a hood curtain. It's the right choice when the problem is door width — not height.
The unique L-pad feature of the FPU seals against the side of the truck, allowing unobstructed access to the trailer and less pressure on the building wall. Standard front-facing foam pads work by compressing against the front face of the trailer. The L-shaped design extends that sealing action to the side surface, which resolves the width gap that wider doors create and distributes sealing force differently — less concentrated pressure on the building wall and a cleaner contact line across the full trailer face.
Dock seals can significantly improve the energy efficiency and environment control of buildings, reducing costs. They provide an effective barrier against the elements, keeping loading docks dry, safe, and efficient, and prevent the passage of dust, insects, exhaust fumes, and other airborne contaminates while the loading dock is in use. All NOVA Dock Seal standard frames are made from pressure-treated and kiln-dried wood for greater moisture resistance and enhanced durability.
Features & Benefits
The cover materials and fabrics have undergone rigorous testing and feature the highest puncture, tear, and abrasion resistance in the industry. Standard features include high-density polyurethane compression foam head and L-shaped side pads, with L-shaped side pads having a 16-inch standard projection and the head pad projection at 10-inches. The pressure-treated kiln-dried wood frame has foam chemically bonded to it. Standard features also include standard full-height yellow guide stripes, heavy-duty galvanized mounting hardware, vented pads for air and moisture release, Velcro® attachments, and lock-stitched sew lines reinforced with UV-resistant thread. All fabric options pass cold resistance testing at -40°F.
Unlike competitors who fully wrap the wood backing, the FPU Dock Seal is stitched along the sides for cleaner removal of cover fabrics, easier recovers, and less dock downtime. This stitched-sides design means that when cover fabric eventually wears through on a high-cycle dock, it can be replaced without removing the full unit from the wall — a meaningful advantage in total cost of ownership. Options include wear pleats, wear face, scuff guards, bottom door flaps (one to three sides), chain-weighted drop curtain, 2-inch foam-filled drop curtain, flame-retardant fabric, top corner pleats only, 24-inch yellow guide stripe, and galvanized metal backs.
Applications
The FPU is specifically designed for facilities with standard dock door heights but wider-than-standard door openings — a configuration that the base FP Series can't accommodate. It performs best where:
- Docks with doors wider than 9 feet — designed for door openings up to 10 x 9-feet, the FPU covers the 9'-6" and 10'-wide configurations that the standard FP cannot seal effectively, using bracket sets sized for each door width.
- High-throughput distribution centers where wide doors allow faster pallet movement and forklift access. The L-pad feature provides unobstructed access to the trailer and reduces pressure on the building wall, supporting faster load/unload cycles without sacrificing the environmental seal.
- Manufacturing and industrial facilities with standard-height but wide dock doors serving wide-body trailers, step-deck trailers, or bulk delivery vehicles that require additional door width clearance.
- Facilities with climate-controlled environments where wide door openings have historically been a persistent source of temperature bleed, dust infiltration, or pest entry that standard-width seals couldn't fully address.
- Existing docks upgrading from worn front-face foam pad seals on wider doors, where the previous seal never covered the full door width — the L-pad geometry resolves the gap structurally rather than requiring a wider or differently configured seal body.
Selection Assistance
The FPU is specified like the FP Series, with the head pad width as the key dimension. Take ½ of the head pad width — the head pad will be 10'4" typical — and mark this distance on both sides of the center line of the door opening. The drawing specification requires door width, door height, dock height, drive approach (level, inclined, or declined), and the dock bumper/ledge combined projection. The key selection question is whether the door opening requires the wider FPU (up to 10 feet wide, 9 feet tall) or a taller configuration — if doors exceed 9 feet in height, the FPH or FPHU Series is the right fit.
