Swivel vs. Rigid — Choosing the Right Configuration

Swivel casters make it easy to maneuver machines, equipment, and trolleys — pivoting freely around a vertical axis for full directional flexibility. Rigid casters, by contrast, move only in a linear direction and are typically paired with swivel casters to maintain directional stability. Most equipment uses two swivel and two rigid casters.

Barron’s Blickle swivel casters are available in pressed steel, welded steel, and industrial-grade bolt-hole configurations, with options for double ball bearings, swivel head seals (for dust and contamination protection), and Blickle’s Stop-Fix brake system. Rigid casters are offered in matching bracket styles — including the high-capacity BEHS and BES industrial series — so you can build a consistent, matched caster set across any cart or equipment platform.

If you need the characteristics of both a swivel and fixed caster in one unit, a directional lock can be attached to the swivel housing — blocking the swivel axis when activated and releasing it when not needed.

Wheel Materials & What They’re Built For

Selecting the right wheel material is as important as choosing the right bracket. Here’s how Blickle’s core wheel families compare:

Polyurethane Wheels (Softhane, Extrathane, Besthane, Besthane Soft) The polyurethane elastomer lineup is Blickle’s most versatile. Polyurethane wheels offer superior floor protection, longer service life, low rolling resistance, high dynamic load capacity, and high tear resistance.

Softhane (75 Shore A) absorbs impacts and protects sensitive floors. Extrathane provides exceptional abrasion resistance for rough surfaces. Besthane and Besthane Soft balance load capacity with floor-friendliness. All have aluminum cores and are non-marking. Ideal for woodworking, aerospace, automotive, and food processing environments.

Rubber Wheels (EasyRoll, SoftMotion) EasyRoll rubber wheels provide quiet, smooth rolling on uneven surfaces with moderate load capacity. SoftMotion wheels are engineered for ultra-low rolling resistance, reducing push-pull ergonomic strain for operators — a strong fit for picking carts, transport carts, and assembly line applications.

Nylon Wheels (Nylon 6, Heavy-Duty Nylon, Cast Nylon) Nylon wheels are resistant to moisture and chemicals, well-suited for corrosive environments or applications where sanitary conditions are important.

Blickle offers standard Nylon 6, impact-resistant heavy-duty Nylon 6, and cast nylon (GSPO) for the highest chemical resistance. Commonly found on waste bins, platform trucks, and job boxes in bakeries and food manufacturing.

Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU/PATH) & Thermoplastic Rubber (TPA) TPU wheels offer a balance of chemical resistance and load capacity with a nylon core. TPA wheels provide cushioning and non-marking performance in light-to-medium-duty applications, with optional synthetic thread guards to prevent cord and hair wrap.

Silicone & High-Temperature Wheels For applications near ovens, dryers, or curing equipment, Blickle’s heat-resistant silicone rubber and thermoplastic high-heat wheels maintain performance at elevated temperatures where standard compounds would fail.
