Soft Sided Dock Shelters – SS Series

Overview

When a trailer docks even slightly off-center — and it happens more than you'd think — a rigid shelter can mean broken curtains, downtime, and a repair bill you didn't budget for. A soft sided dock shelter is built for exactly that reality. The foam side pads absorb and redirect the impact rather than fighting it, keeping your dock operational and your building wall protected.

The Soft Sided Dock Shelter is designed for door openings up to 12 feet wide by 12 feet high, providing maximum dock protection and full access to trailers while minimizing pressure on the building wall.

Features & Benefits

Trailers back in at varying heights and angles, drivers aren't always perfectly aligned, and docks in busy facilities take a constant beating. A soft sided design addresses this head-on. The foam side pads on this shelter easily bend and compress out of the way of off-center trailers to prevent unit and building damage, and the side curtains attach with Velcro® to eliminate dock downtime. Rather than cracking or tearing under lateral stress, the foam sides absorb damaging force and compression, then return to position.

Beyond impact resistance, a properly sealed loading dock offers significant operational advantages. Dock shelters can significantly improve the energy efficiency and environment control of buildings, reducing costs. They provide an effective barrier against the elements, keeping loading docks dry, safe, and efficient, and prevent the passage of dust, insects, exhaust fumes, and other airborne contaminates while the loading dock is in use. For facilities with climate-controlled environments such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, cold storage, whose thermal barrier is the difference between compliance and costly product loss.

Applications

The SS Series is designed for facilities where dock conditions are demanding, trailer types vary, and downtime is not an option. Because the shelter compresses and bends out of the way of trucks that approach off-center or misalign with the dock, it performs well across a wide range of industries and dock configurations — particularly anywhere driver alignment is inconsistent, approach grades vary, or environmental control at the dock face is a compliance or operational requirement.

  • Distribution & Fulfillment Centers — High-cycle docks receiving a wide variety of trailer heights and widths benefit from foam side pads that flex and recover without adjustment between trucks.
  • Cold Storage & Food-Grade Facilities — The environmental seal blocks temperature bleed, pest infiltration, and airborne contaminants during loading and unloading, supporting energy efficiency and food safety compliance.
  • Manufacturing & Industrial Plants — Tapered unit configurations are available for inclined and declined dock approaches, making the SS Series viable for facilities with uneven grade or non-standard dock geometry.
  • Chemical, Agricultural & Processing Facilities — The optional flame-retardant design self-extinguishes a flame in two seconds or less, providing a passive layer of fire risk mitigation at the dock face where certain materials or processes create elevated ignition risk.
  • Facilities Upgrading from Rigid-Frame Shelters — Operations that experience frequent curtain tears or frame damage from off-center impacts often see a significant reduction in repair frequency after switching to a soft sided design.

Selection Assistance

Selecting the right configuration starts with four key measurements: door width, door height, dock height, and the dock bumper/ledge combined projection. From there, drive approach — level, inclined, or declined — determines whether a standard or tapered unit is needed, and your facility's traffic volume, trailer mix, and any fire risk considerations will guide the right fabric choice. FAQs

What is a soft sided dock shelter?

A soft sided dock shelter uses foam-filled side pads rather than rigid panels. The foam compresses and flexes when a trailer makes off-center contact, absorbing the impact and springing back rather than cracking or tearing. This design is ideal for high-volume docks or facilities receiving trailers of varying widths and heights.

What door opening sizes does the NOVA SS Series accommodate?

The NOVA SS Series Dock Shelter is designed to fit door openings from 8 x 8-feet up to 12 x 12-feet. Custom sizing is available for larger or non-standard openings — contact Barron for a custom quote.

How are the side curtains attached, and can they be removed for maintenance?

Side curtains are positioned on the front face of the side pad and secured using Velcro® flaps pressed firmly onto the pad surface. They detach and reattach quickly without tools, making routine maintenance and replacement straightforward.

Is a flame-retardant fabric option available?

Yes. The SS Series offers an optional flame-retardant fabric design that self-extinguishes a flame in two seconds or less. This option is not available on competing dock shelter products.

What wall types can the NOVA SS Series be installed on?

Installation is compatible with concrete block or brick walls (using ½" or ⅜" x 4" expansion anchors), precast concrete (same method), and metal skin buildings (through bolt fastening with a steel or wood back-up plate, or anchored through existing building girts or purlins).

What is the standard shelter projection?

The standard shelter projection is 24 inches. Custom projections are available based on your dock bumper configuration and approach conditions. Barron can help determine the correct projection during the quoting process.
